Workshop: The Art of Not Taking Yourself so Seriously
October 14-16th
led by Moshe Cohen
Explore and enjoy the deep connection between your humor and your human.
Open up your world of ridiculousness, playfulness and absurdity. Moshe’s
teaching revolves around the central theme of developing your ability
to listen, to your body, to what you are expressing, to how it is received
by the audience, all the while engaging your sense of playfulness and
humor. The work is twofold: developing and humorizing a vocabulary of
physical expression; and two, learning to play this world for, and in
inter-relation with an audience. There is an emphasis placed on listening
with all your senses, and to being present in the moment. Come and find
your connection between humor and spirit.

the evening with a vegetarian pot-luck dinner, followed by sacred dancing
(very simple dancing anyone can do), followed by a Repentance and Renewal
of Vows ceremony (Fusatsu). After the ceremony we meditate through the
new year, and then we are served tea by the teachers and senior students

Classes
Beginning Zen Instruction
Every Thursday and Sunday night at 7:30, we offer an 'Introduction to
Meditation' class at the Portland Dharma Center. The class covers the
basics of meditation, such as posture, what to do with your mind during
meditation, and the different forms and styles of meditation. The class
includes two or more short meditation periods, with a chance to discuss
the meditation afterwards with the group. The classes are usually small
(2 to 6 people) and very casual. The classes are free, and open to all.
Even if you have no interest in Buddhism, but are interested in learning
how to meditate, these classes could be of use.
Dharma Classes
Dharma classes which address various Buddhist themes are frequently offered
on Sundays from 3:30 -5:30 PM at the Portland Dharma Center (2514 SE Madison).
These classes are a wonderful way to share and learn from each other's
experiences. Please check back here as we post new class offerings.
If you have a suggestion
for a class, please let us know. Thanks.
Monthly
Potlucks We host
monthly potlucks at the Portland Dharma Center ( 2514 SE Madison) at 6PM
on the first Thursday of each month. It's fun and a great way to get to
know one another. We invite you to consider volunteering to host a potluck
in conjunction with one of the residents of the Great Vow Zen Monastery.
