Taking the Five Precepts

What are the Precepts?

The precepts are the Buddhist guidelines for ethical living. The first five of these precepts can be received/taken in a formal public ceremony with the Zen Community of Oregon:

  1. I vow not to kill, but to cherish all life.
  2. I vow not to steal, but to respect the things of others.
  3. I vow not to misuse sexual energy, but to be honest and respectful in mind and action.
  4. I vow not to lie, but to speak the truth.
  5. I vow not to misuse drugs or alcohol, but to keep the mind clear.

Does taking these precepts mean that one is officially a “Buddhist”?

Since these precepts are common to all religious traditions, we do not view this ceremony as one of “becoming a Buddhist.” People who formally take the first five Buddhist precepts are affirming their intention to live a wholesome, ethical life.
