Abby Mushin Terris

Mushin Abby Terris began Zen practice in 1975 with Seattle Zen Center, and did her first sesshins with Priest Hirano, a meditation master visiting from Eiheiji Monastery. She met Robert Aitken Roshi in 1977 and did a residential training period at the Maui Zendo with him. Upon her return, she practiced with Takabayashi Genki at the Seattle Zen Center Sangha and then with Jo-An Rieck , Roshi until she began practicing with Chozen Bays, Roshi in 1988.

Over the ensuing years, while developing a rich householder practice, marrying, raising two daughters, and working as a psychotherapist, she served in several roles with ZCO. She was named a Dharma Holder by Chozen Bays, Roshi in 2004, completed Sanghakai training in 2009, and in 2013 received Sangha Transmission from Chozen Bays, Roshi, becoming a Lay Teacher.

Since 1992, Mushin has led the Corvallis Zen Circle, which has become a thriving center for householder Zen practice, with a full offering of practice formats. CZC is now in the process of building a community Dharma hall in Corvallis that will house not only their own Sangha Jewel Temple, but also other local Buddhist groups in the Tibetan, Vipassana, and Vietnamese Zen traditions. Mushin also leads retreats at Great Vow Zen Monastery and at the Empty Field Zendo in Eugene.
