Geshe Sonam Gurang

Geshe Sonam grew up in an indigenous Bon Po region of Nepal, in the Pangling Village area of Mustang. When he was 9 years old he was sent by the local Bon Po lama to become a monk at Menri Monastery, the seat of the Bon Po religion in the Dolanji area of India. He spent 14 years obtaining his Geshe degree under the guidance of His Holiness Menri Trizin, the spiritual leader and lineage holder of the Bon Po and the Head Abbott of Menri Monastery.

After obtaining his Geshe degree he served as a personal assistant to His Holiness. Recently, Geshe Sonam has been returning to the Pangling area of Mustang to re-establish and spread the Bon Po teachings there.

A documentary Bon: From Mustang to Menri was recently made on Geshe Sonam’s life and work.
