Jan Chozen Bays, MD

Jan Bays, MD received a BA degree with honors in biology from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, and an MD degree from University of California at San Diego. She has taught pediatrics as an assistant professor at UC San Diego and clinical instructor of pediatrics at OHSU. In the late 1980’s she helped found the Child Abuse Response and Assessment Center (CARES NW) at Legacy Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon, where she served as medical director for ten years. Jan Bays is also a meditation teacher in the Zen School. She has been practicing and teaching meditation for over 40 years and is one of the guiding teachers of the Zen Community of Oregon. Mindful Eating came to Jan as a discovery that crossed her two professions. Concerned about the obesity epidemic in the West. She now teaches Mindful Eating to professionals in the US and Europe, and her book Mindful Eating: Rediscovering a Healthy Relationship with Food (Shambala, 2009) is highly regarded resource for all those with a personal or clinical interest in Mindful Eating.
