24 Hour Zazen Vigil
24 Hour Zazen Vigil
October 9

Dear Heart of Wisdom Sangha:

Last night we concluded our 24 hour zazen vigil as the beginning for our Dedication Ceremony for Heart of Wisdom Zen Buddhist Temple. I wanted to thank all who participated in the vigil and for all of those who supported it. It felt as if the whole Sangha was there in the zendo in person or in spirit. We started in the dark, sat through the night, into the morning light, and throughout the day. The the afternoon sun streamed through the windows, the sun set, we sat in the twilight, and then the dark again. A full cycle of day and night, light and dark, zazen throughout, all within this scared space.

People came, sat and left through out the night and day. All in silence; all with purpose; all just flowing. It was as if the whole sangha was there sitting the vigil, lighting candles, moving in silence.

This is exactly what a vigil is...from the New Oxford American Dictionary:

A period of keeping awake during the time usually spent asleep, esp. to keep watch or pray.  A stationary, peaceful demonstration in support of a particular cause, typically without speeches. (In the Christian Church) the eve of a festival or holy day as an occasion of religious observance, nocturnal devotions.

Our vigil and the ceremony tonight marks the spiritual dedication of Heart of Wisdom. We have a very strong and firm foundation in our spiritual practice. Our next steps will be to manifest these intentions as we plan, develop, create and welcome all to Heart of Wisdom Zen Temple.

With gratitude,

Kodo

The zendo floor is ready for continuous use at Heart of Wisdom Zen Temple.  Thank you for  the many careful, loving  hours of work from the rehab team and floor bodhisatva Wayne Haack.

There is still plenty of work to do as we look at the outside of the building.  There is a great need for workers of all skill levels for short term tasks and to fill our current and expanding services positions.  Please contact me or Ryushin if you have some time and interest.

With gratitude,  Kodo (503-502-6474)

So much news!  The transformation of the temple is miraculous and growing with every day.  The zendo floor is nearly finished, the stairs, banister and trim are all finished and up.  The sanzen room is taking shape.  The garden is in bloom.

DON'T FORGET! Starting THIS THURSDAY, June 30th, we will begin sitting and practicing at our new temple: 6401 NE 10th Ave. Doors open at 7, but we will need to clean and set up the temple, so if you have time and energy, feel free to show up anytime after 6pm to lend a hand. We will start off in our new home with zazen at 7:35, followed by a 5 Precepts ceremony. Please come and experience your new Heart of Wisdom Zen Temple, built by YOU!

Work Practice on Sat. June 18....Hogen brought Jogen, Kotestu, Gentoku and Kondo from the monastery.  Their helping hands along with the helping hands from Heart of Wisdom (Wayne, Zac, Evan, Robert, Seiko, Suzan, Bansho, Matt K., Nan, Diane B. and Kodo) allowed us to sand, paint, clean, patch, fix and install lights.  Two trips to the dump and removal of the carpet rounded out the work day.

Work on the zendo floor, stairway, sanzen room and other parts of Heart of Wisdom continues. Wayne Haack is leading the floor restoration and without him we would not have an increasingly beautiful zendo floor.  Wayne's contribution to this project is invaluable.

Others who have been hard at the hard work this week include Wayne, Doug, Robert, Andy, Evan, Allan, Akim, Zac and Jack (the plumber).  We will soon have hot water!

Thanks to all who came to the last work practice and to those who have been providing food!

Please drop by and see the great progress.
