Fusatsu: Ceremony of Repentance and Renewal
December 19, 2020
7:00P - 9:00P
As practitioners of the Dharma we aspire to live a life of wisdom and compassion. One that recognizes our interconnection with all beings. We take up the practice of self-reflection–openly turning the light of awareness and seeing the places we are not fully living up to our highest potential. It is crucial that we look at our lives not only from a personal filter, but also acknowledge how our thoughts, words and actions affect our families, our communities, our society and our planet. True inter-connection recognizes that we are part of this great network of interbeing. Undoing systems of oppression and injustice begins with this heart. We do this ceremony as a community and we activate our vow for collective awakening.
Join us for a night of reflection, repentance and renewal of vow. Anyone is welcome to attend this ceremony, you do not need to be a Buddhist. We will affirm the 16 Bodhisattva Precepts together. Taking these precepts to heart, and allowing them to truly guide our actions is the work of wisdom, justice and love. May we embody our ethics and create a world where all beings can live, flourish and awaken.
The schedule of events can be found below
7:00P – Zazen
8:30P – The Fusatsu Ceremony includes a reflection time for us to recognize and reflect on the ways we are implicated in systems of injustice. The Statement of Recognition and Repentance was developed by the Soto Zen Buddhist Association. The full statement will not be read during the ceremony, you are invited to take the time to read and reflect on it before the ceremony begins.
The ceremony involves the practice of bowing. Bowing affirms oneness and humility. We touch the earth, remembering that we are made of the earth and are always in connection with the living breathing body of the Earth. We acknowledge if someone in this world is suffering, we are all suffering. And that we all have the capacity for love, compassion, freedom and joy.
This event will take place on zoom.
