April Sesshin – Cultivating the Empty Field

April 11 - 17, 2022

Monday 5pm to Sunday 1pm

Our meditation practice can be one of relaxed openness and vivid presence, with wisdom into our nature naturally revealing. This is the practice of serene-illumination, a form of meditation where calm-abiding (shamatha) and insight (vipassana) are practiced as one.

In this retreat we practice serene illumination meditation and celebrate the teachings of Master Hongzhi who articulated serene illumination profoundly in Cultivating The Empty Field. Each day will include a talk on one of Master Hongzhi’s mediation instructions from Cultivating The Empty Field.

Jogen Sensei will be leading on-site at Great Vow. This retreat will be offered at Great Vow Zen Monastery and online.

Sesshin is a rigorous and, at times, challenging silent meditation retreat that is not recommended for beginners. In order to attend in person, we require that you attend one of our silent weekend retreats or a five-seven day silent retreat at another Zen Center before registering for our longer zen retreats. For more information about what to expect when attending a sesshin, click here.

This retreat is offered both in-person and online!

For the latest on our health policies click here. Participants must be fully vaccinated including a booster. Molecular tests are no longer required. Please bring a rapid test to self administer upon arrival.

$50 deposit holds your space; balance due on arrival.
