SOLD OUT Jizo Seated with Child, Hand Carved

In Japan, Jizo is traditionally considered the guardian of children (both before and after birth), deceased children and aborted fetuses, women, and travelers. In Sanskrit, Jizo's name is Kishitagarba which means "Earth Womb", "Earth Treasury", "Earth Store", or "Earth Matrix". Kṣitigarbha is known for his or her vow to take responsibility for the awakening of all beings in the six worlds between the death of Gautama Buddha and the rise of Maitreya, as well as her/his vow not to achieve Buddhahood until all hells are emptied. (S)he is therefore often regarded as the bodhisattva of the hell realms carrying a staff to force open the gates of hell and a wish-fulfilling jewel to light up the darkness. Jizo embodies the qualities of vow, determination, courage, fearlessness, optimism, and benevolence.

The Standing Jizo with Child statue is a wonderful gift for anyone and especailly for new parents, children, grandparents, or in memory of someone who has passed. It is also an elegant addition to your altar, office, or home.

These elegant wooden Jizos are hand made by woodcarvers in Bali out of Bentiwas wood, a light-colored, sustainably-harvested tropical wood. They are brought to us by our friend Victoria at the Garden of Buddhas Statuary. For more about the artists who carve these statues, please click here.
