Awakening the Body: A weekend meditation retreat bringing together the ancient traditions of Hatha Yoga and Zen Buddhism.

Friday, July 05, 2019 - 5:00 pm to Sunday, July 07, 2019 - 1:00 pm

This yoga is not about gymnastics, contortionism or pushing, pulling and stretching the muscles. This yoga is about unsystematically undoing the tension in the body, so the body becomes freer and expresses an aliveness, clarity and beauty. — Christine Borg

Yoga asanas (postures) and pranayama (yogic breath practices) were originally developed to prepare the body for seated presence meditation, which is the primary practice of Zen Buddhism. In this retreat we will explore the various limbs of yoga, beyond just asana, in conjunction with Zen practice. We will also explore intuitive movement as a way to release and heal energetic blockages in the body-mind in preparation for seated meditation.

Emphasis will be placed on recognizing and releasing fixed views and standards that we impose upon our bodies; opening instead to the direct experience of the body before our ideas about it. Guided meditations and yoga instruction will be offered, as well as encouragement for each participant to deeply experience themselves and awaken to the natural transparency, freedom, and love of the unhindered body-mind.

This will be an intensive meditation retreat with approximately 8 hours of seated meditation over the course of the weekend and is not recommended for people without previous meditation experience.
