Sumi-e Painting Workshop with Martha Ekyo Maezumi

Friday, March 01, 2019 - 7:30 pm to Saturday, March 02, 2019 - 5:00 pm

Sumi-e painting is the traditional Japanese ink painting that appears to have had roots in early Zen practice in Japan. Many of the first sumi-e painters were zen monks, giving sumi-e the astethic of simplicity and concentrated beauty. In sumi-e each stroke has artistic value, and plays a significant part in the painting.

This workshop is meant to give participants a taste of this ancient Japanese art. We will be invited into the asthetic and discipline of sumi-e, as we bring the mind of meditation into expression. Martha Maezumi marries both her decades as an artist with her decades as a zen practitioner. Inviting us to explore our own creativity in a way that is both serious and playful.

This refreshing and productive workshop is appropriate for anyone, including those with no prior experience in Sumi-e painting and those with years of experience in painting. We will supply paper, brushes and ink. Ekyo will begin with simple brushstrokes to focus the mind, then move on to calligraphy and traditional Buddhist subjects.

Ekyo loves working with children, this retreat is suitable for ages 12+

Please note that this event takes place in our Portland Temple location and is NOT an overnight retreat.

The workshop begins Friday night, March 1st at 7:30pm ending around 9:30pm and then resumes on Saturday March 2nd at 9AM - 5PM.
