ALMOST FULL - Zanga Painting Workshop with Martha Ekyo Maezumi and Chozen Roshi

Friday, March 01, 2019 - 7:30 pm to Saturday, March 02, 2019 - 5:00 pm

This workshop is nearly full! Please email the registrar@zendust.org if you are interested in attending.

Come have fun with Ekyo Maezumi and Roshi Jan Chozen Bays in a Zenga painting experience!

What is Zenga?
Zenga is a simple, flowing, free style of painting used to illustrate koans or other Zen subjects.
Ekyo is the widow of Maezumi Roshi, and an experienced teacher of Zenga painting. She can help you learn to create your own Jizo, Kannon or Zodiac Animal.

This workshop is meant to give participants a taste of this ancient Japanese art. We will be invited into the asthetic and discipline of sumi-e, as we bring the mind of meditation into expression. Martha Maezumi marries both her decades as an artist with her decades as a zen practitioner. Inviting us to explore our own creativity in a way that is both serious and playful.

This refreshing and productive workshop is appropriate for anyone, including those with no prior experience in Sumi-e or Zenga painting and those with years of experience in painting. We will supply paper, brushes and ink. Ekyo will begin with simple brushstrokes to focus the mind, then move on to calligraphy and traditional Buddhist subjects.

Ekyo loves working with children, this retreat is suitable for ages 12+

Please note that this event takes place in our Portland Temple location and is NOT an overnight retreat.

The workshop begins Friday night, March 1st at 7:30pm ending around 9:30pm and then resumes on Saturday March 2nd at 9AM - 5PM.

$50 suggested fee, includes lunch on Saturday and all supplies. Please bring a painting apron if you have one. Donations are welcomed to support the teacher.
